Getting students to practice scales consistently can be tough. The Reef Full of Scales Contest turns scale practice into a fun, team-based challenge that builds technique, consistency, and studio community, all without pressure. My students did it over the course of our four-month semester and it was an absolute hit! I had students of all ages, from second-graders to teenagers, walk in through the studio door and before even saying hello they'd declare, "I want to play my scales!"

Students are placed on mixed-level teams called reefs. Throughout the semester (or length of time the teacher determines), they earn fish for their team by passing off level-appropriate scales in lessons. To earn a fish, students must practice scales at least four days that week, and they’re limited to three fish per lesson to keep progress balanced and manageable.

Scales are always adjusted by level, from 5-finger patterns for beginners to two-octave scales, minor scales, and arpeggios for more advanced students. This allows every student to contribute meaningfully, regardless of experience. Studio friendships are strengthened through teamwork and friendly competition; students always love to find their fish and see progress week by week! Some creative kids decided to draw smiles on the major scale fish and frowns on the minor-scale fish. My students loved choosing their different colors of fish and creating patterns with other reef-mates, like the huge clump of indigo fish in the yellow reef's seaweed.

As a teacher, I loved this contest because it encourages consistent practice, strengthens technique, and creates positive peer motivation without competition. I felt like I'd won the piano-teaching lottery when in the same week I had an eight year old sigh "I just love playing scales!" and a teenage boy exclaim "Can we please jump right in to the scales? I want to show you how I got all of the minor keys!"

We tracked our scales over the course of a semester from January to April, and the awards were presented at our Spring Recital. My 27 students earned a total of 365 fish across the three reefs- each fish representing a minimum of four days of practice and at least one scale! The awards were all fish-themed, with the winning team receiving gold medals with fish on them! Every student received a prize and all were thrilled to have earned so many fish.

I've shared this idea with other piano teachers and received so much positive feedback and requests for more information! To make implementation easy, I’ve created a Reef Full of Scales PDF Packet with full teacher instructions, scale level guides, student and parent explanations, and studio display ideas and materials. It includes everything I used to set it up in my studio and more! Email cristinanewellmusic@gmail.com to purchase the packet for $5! If you’re looking for a low-prep, high-impact way to motivate scale practice all semester, Reef Full of Scales is a great place to start. 🎹🐟
