For many aspiring musicians, the goal of lessons is to master pieces of music. However, at Newell Piano Studios, we believe that true joy in playing the piano comes when music is shared, regardless of the level or difficulty of the music.
We offer a variety of performance opportunities, not just one annual recital, designed to nurture every student regardless of their comfort level on stage and present different situations in which music can be shared.
Why Performance is Essential for Growth
Performance is more than just playing notes; it’s about building crucial life skills that last long after the lesson ends. For children (and truly learners of all ages!), the recitals provide:
Motivation and Goal-Setting: Performance deadlines turn practice into focused, goal-oriented work. It is so satisfying to choose a piece to learn and polish it!
Resilience and Confidence: Students learn to manage nerves- a skill vital for tests, public speaking, and interviews. They practice introducing themselves to their audience, handling minor mistakes, and getting back on track immediately.
The Joy of Sharing: The emotional reward of sharing their hard-earned skill and connecting with an audience is priceless. Students love seeing their fellow pianists perform and celebrating their dedication to learning the piano together!
The Studio Stage: Our Performance Spectrum
At Newell Piano Studios, we ensure every student has a chance to shine and showcase different ways they like to perform.
We offer several performance opportunities each semester, including our semester-end recitals, community service events, and honors recitals hosted by the Dayton Music Club and Beavercreek Piano Teachers Association.

Newell Piano Studio Recitals: Themed Showcases
Each semester, we offer a recital at the end of our 13-week block of lessons for students to showcase what they've worked on the past few months. These recitals are designed to develop different, yet equally essential, skills for each pianist. We offer three studio-wide opportunities each year:
Event | Semester | Location & Focus | Key Skill Developed |
Formal Recital | Spring | Local library grand piano. Showcase a polished piece in a traditional recital environment. | Formal presentation and poise. |
Piano Park Picnic | Summer | Local park pavilion. Students showcase a piece they composed. | Creativity and sharing original work. |
Winter Recital Party | Fall | Studio grand piano. Students play background music as others mingle during the party. | Selecting repertoire and playing to fill time. Performing background music. |
Formal Evaluation: NFMC Festival
Students who are enrolled in private lessons and have completed their primer method books are encouraged to participate in the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) Festival. This is a nationwide music festival where musicians perform two pieces for a panel of judges and receive constructive feedback and a rating. After three years (or earning 15 points), students receive a trophy- a powerful reward for long-term consistency and effort!

Ready to Take the Stage?
Performance is not a high-pressure test; it’s a necessary, joyful, and vital part of the piano student's journey. By offering this variety, we ensure that every student can find a stage that allows them to shine and truly share their music.
