Welcome to Newell Piano Studio! I'm so excited to work together to learn to play the piano. Our lessons will focus on learning from one of my favorite piano books called WunderKeys Primer Piano Book One, which is one of the top piano method series in the market. This second edition of this book was published in early 2025 and is the latest in making learning to play the piano as much fun as it can be! This book is divided into ten units, which we will work on over the course of our semester. We will start by exploring the piano keyboard (high vs. low) and the sounds we can make. Next will learn basic rhythm notation, correct finger numbers and how that corresponds to reading music, and keyboard geography. By the end of the semester we will be reading and playing simple sheet music on the staff. So exciting! The best part is that all of these things will be learned through playing fun songs and doing off the bench music games to reinforce the skills.

Each student will need their own copy of the book (siblings can share), which you can order from Amazon here.

Each student will need their own folder to keep loose leaf music and worksheets in, a set of colored pencils to use during lessons, and a pencil to write with.

Students should keep their music, writing utensils, and folder in a bag or backpack dedicated only to piano supplies. It is so helpful to have a place to store piano materials that's easy to grab on your way out the door to lessons.

Students will use the pianos in the studio during their lesson, but each student needs to have a piano or 88-key keyboard to practice on at home. If you have any questions about getting a piano, I wrote this article to help you find the perfect fit for your family!

To summarize, please come prepared to your first (and subsequent) lesson with the following:

  • Bag or backpack only for piano supplies

  • Lesson book

  • Colored pencils

  • Pencil

  • Folder for additional worksheets/music

Please let me know if you have any questions! I look forward to learning together!
